Day 9 - The Road Ahead

Today was the day the team left me to face the road ahead alone. To be totally honest, I was slightly worried about this departure but I've braved it well.
Karen collected the team around 5am this morning from The Valampuri, but without any surprise I did not wake to say goodbye. I was sound-o until I needed to wake for school this morning.
I was collected at 8am to be taken to Sweetee's house near the village I will be stationed in the next couple of weeks. My luggage was dropped off, and then I was taken straight to the school!
It was great to get stuck in immediately to the school life and processes. Based in Miss Reenashree's class was a huge honour, especially as it seems she is the teacher in charge. I feel that today she's shown me the ropes and eased me in well. Focussing on the 5 oldest students has been a great challenge as I have always preferred spending time/teaching younger children.
Generally the children work independently, and learn through 'PACE' books, which are self-teaching tools, all in English.
Snack time was a great experience as I was fed by the other teachers, I had a tour of Sri Lanka in food today, and it was a delight.
School finishes at 2pm for the older children, and I was greeted by a curry, dhal and rice for lunch. A quick change and then headed to the girls home to teach English to those who struggle with the communication and understanding aspect of the English Language. I have been told English is such an imperative part of life here, and it is the step towards progression and job prospects. I conducted a 1 hour class, and began with simple vocabulary. By the sound of things, I'll be here every day for the next few weeks.
Sweetee fed me a great dinner tonight - perfect for settling into my new home. Tonight I spoke to mum to update her on my journey in Jaffna. Now I'm off to bed, and ready for my early start for school tomorrow; apparently assembly begins at 7am...
