Charity Sector Experience
February 2016 - Present
After my first trip to Sri Lanka, I was invited by the trustees of the Charity to become an ambassador. My roles and responsibilities include:
- Social Media Co-ordination
- Communications Team
- Fundraising & Events Team
- Volunteer relations
As a relatively small and local charity, it is great having my skills developed and the time put into me to help me become the best Ambassador possible, for the Charity's gain.
September 2014 - June 2015
Myself and 3 peers set up a Hope for Justice Abolition Group, specifically for university students passionate about eradicating slavery in the modern day. After hearing CEO and founder of Hope for Justice, Ben Cooley speak at a local event we felt moved to do something to help the cause of this charity.
Helped by a church member, we began a new venture; becoming the first ever Abolition Group based on a university campus. We were, a guinea pig trial run, where we were setting the president for future groups and finding out what the regulations and loop holes we had to jump through in order for having a Abolition Groups on campuses across the UK. We began the move on campuses, with full support from Ben Cooley, and other local Abolition Groups.
It was a successful venture, and we were a ratified society in our university within the first 3 months of setting up. We ran a few fundraisers for the charity, including an open mic night and also a quiz night.
September 2013 - June 2015
As a volunteer with The University of Lincoln Students' Union, I dedicated my time across my second and third years to give back to the community I had belonged to for three years. This included helping move new students into their accommodation during freshers' week; manning stations in the 'generosity' weeks and helping at open days. Alongside this, I spent one day a week helping in the local hospice's charity shop in Lincoln city centre.
From this time of volunteering I received the GOLD Award from the University Students' Union, as a recognition for my efforts.
August 2014
During the Summer of 2014, I spent a week at One Event, on the Lincolnshire Showground helping raise funds for Acts Trust. Acts Trust is a Lincolnshire based charity which aims to break the chains of poverty from those living in the county. I worked in the 'Tatie Tent' helping to serve customers, work on the tills and set up/pack down the venue. It amazing to be a part of something that local people were really behind, believed in and supported, where I was able to hear the testimonies of people who had been touched by this cause.
June 2013 - September 2013
For 3 months in 2013, I spent my weekdays helping in the local AgeUK charity shop; this involved working on the tills, sorting stock and learning about Gift Aid. Hearing from other volunteers what Age UK was about and how it helped either people they knew or themselves, encouraged me during my time of volunteering.
